Like oil and water

I have been thinking about making a lunch bag for sometime, and when I saw the fig oil cloth at the fabric store I was inspired to use it as a lining for a knitted bag. The bag is knit with Cascade Pastaza, a very beautiful and sturdy feeling wool. I designed the shape keeping in mind the lunch containers that hold leftovers for my lunch, which are all round.

From a distance the fig lunch back looks like it is progressing well.

But, sewing in the oil cloth was much more difficult than I expected. First I forgot that the oil cloth does not have the same give as a knitted piece of fabric, so the actual volume of the bag is smaller than I planned. Sewing with bias tape for the first time and oil cloth for the first time was my second mistake. Keeping the tape even on both sides of a slippery layer and a layer with give is more than awkward. Up close, one can see that the bias tape that I have sewed on so far is all wonky around the handle...

...and not even around the top edge. It looks more awkward in person than in these low light photos. Plan B is to carefully pull out the stitching and hand sew the bias tape back on. I haven't thought of plan C yet.
